worship through action

In the spirit of reconciliation, we acknowledge that we live, work and play on the traditional lands of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Siksike, Kainai, Piikani), the Tsuut’ina, the Nakoda Nations, the Metis Nation (Region 3) and all people who make their home in the Treaty 7 region of Southern Alberta.

Irricana United Church is located on Hwy 567 between the city of Airdrie and the town of Irricana. Our rural setting provides a unique location for worship as well as contemplation and reflection. We are a casual church with worship services ranging from traditional to contemporary.

We invite you to join us each Sunday morning at 10:30 am for service. Coffee & Conversation following service.
Come as you are comfortable.

Lent is a period observed in the Christian calendar, dedicated to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. It commences on Ash Wednesday and concludes at sundown on Holy Thursday.

  • Lent lasts 40 days—but did you know it’s actually 46 days on the calendar? Sundays don’t count as fasting days!
  • Why 40 days? It’s inspired by Jesus spending 40 days in the desert, and matches other famous 40-day events in the Bible—like Noah’s flood or the Israelites’ wilderness journey.
  • Kickoff: Ash Wednesday—people may get a cross of ashes on their forehead to show repentance and remember mortality.
  • Finish Line: Easter Sunday—Lent wraps up just before Easter, the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection.
  • Not about earning points! Lent isn’t for gaining God’s favour or avoiding punishment. It’s a spiritual “training camp” to break bad habits, clear distractions, and focus on what matters most.
  • Lenten practices: Some give up chocolate, coffee, or social media; others add extra prayer, reading the Bible, or volunteering.
  • The “Three Pillars” of Lent: Prayer (talking to God), fasting (giving something up), and almsgiving (helping those in need).
